The First Epistle of Paul the Apostle to
Timothy
As many know, these are called the Pastoral Epistles as Paul is writing to Timothy as his capacity as a pastor - directives for pastors are found in these pages of the KJV 1611.

However, I am going to take a unique approach.  Seeing that the man of the family is also to be the 'pastor' to his family, we will go through these two books with a different view.  We will be looking towards the man of the house being the pastor of the house.  A responsibility that is not to be taken lightly.

Naturally, as a pastor, I will be 'reviewing' my directives as we go through Timothy.  As I preach the 'pastor stuff', the folks in the congregation will be able to better understand what their pastor is to be following for guidelines, etc.  For those who wonder why I say and do what I say and do, maybe this series will help them 'get a grip' with their pastor in these last days of apostate and spineless Christianity.

But the major emphasis will be toward the man in the family.  We will be expounding upon these verses in relation to the man's relationship and his guidance directives within his own family.

According to Ephesians 5, the man is the spiritual head of the family.  That makes him the 'pastor' of the family.  I will pastor the flock - I will be the shepherd for the sheep in this local congregation.  Equally so, he man of the house should lead his flock.  He is the shepherd for his little home flock.  He is their home 'pastor'.

This is a unique approach and I pray hard that God will honor and bless this direction for our church men!  As always, many thanks and praise to God for the basic material from Dr. Ruckman along with God's direction that this particular study will go regarding us fathers!

Introduction
I Timothy 1:1-3
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour,

and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia,
that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine...
Timothy, a son in the faith
Note that Paul is addressing Timothy as his 'own son in the faith'.  Remembering our direction here as pastoral epistles being directed to the man of the family as the 'pastor' of the house.

There is another application here:  one that is applicable to a person who has 'led someone to the Lord'.  That person is like the 'father' to that new child of God.  Not to mistake the Catholic direction of calling that person 'Father', which is strictly forbidden in the scriptures, when a person leads someone to the Lord for their salvation, they have in effect, taken on a responsibility towards that new christian to lead them in certain Biblical directions, as we will see in this study.

Charges
To a pastor, to the man of the house and to a spiritual 'father'

Before beginning an exposition of the Timothy texts, notice that the book of Timothy is written in the form of a 'ministerial charge'.  There are twelve charges that are given to Timothy by Paul.  A charge , in this case, is a commandment to take care of something (i.e. to put someone 'in charge').  We will deal with each charge separately as we go through the study, but here are the general charges.

Reminder:  The key point to remember throughout this study of I & II Timothy, is that these charges are going to be applied here to three people - 1) a local church pastor;  2) the man of the house as the home pastor and 3) to a man who has led someone to the Lord as they are that new christians' 'father'.

If the below reference is linked, then the study is complete to that portion through I Timothy.
This is a weekly Sunday Night Service series, so it will be updated weekly.

I.
I Timothy 1:3-20
This is a charge to remember the purpose of the law and those who pervert it. It is also a charge to remember the true nature of the gospel and the need for a MILITARY approach to maintaining its purity.

II.
I Timothy 2:1-8
This is a charge to continue in prayer and teach your church (as a pastor) and your family (as the father) to pray.  Some good instruction from the man who led someone to the Lord - those new babes in Christ need to learn about prayer.

III.
Part 1  I Timothy 2:9,10
Part 2.  I Timothy 2:11-15
This is a charge to show the women in the church their proper place within the church family.  The father/husband is also charged here to show his wife her proper place within that particular family, as well.

IV.
Part I  I Timothy 3:1,2
This is a charge regarding our standards that God has established regarding our leadership positions.  There is much to learn in this section as there has been tremendous damage done to the ministry through the abuse of these standards.  There is great application in regards to the man being the 'overseer' of the family - the family 'pastor'.

V.  I Timothy 3:8-13
This is a charge to of similiar application towards deacons and the other men in the church family.

VI.  I Timothy 3:14-16
This is a charge to be 'aware' of the true nature of the body of Christ.  There is a heretical basket of teachings floating around regarding the perversions of the true body of Christ.  This must not be ignored within the church family, the home family or for the 'new believer'!

VII.  I Timothy 4:1-11
This is a charge to beware of Roman Catholic teaching already creeping into the local assemblies in the first century and has continued strong right up even into the local KJV assemblies today.

VIII.  I Timothy 4:12-16
This is a charge to attend unto personal holiness and intellectual and spiritual development as a pastor AND as a father as well as a proper example to the new 'babe' in Christ.

IX.  I Timothy 5:1-16
This is a charge to treat older men and women properly, in particular, elderly widows with no support.  There is some great foundation for a church family as well as a guide for a home family.

X.  I Timothy 5:17-25
This is a charge on how to deal with elders, open sin and a personal note on Timothy's own health along with some miscellaneous comments regarding an example of good works vs sin.

XI.  I Timothy 6:1-5
This is a charge showing the correct relationship between servants and masters.

XII.  I Timothy 6:6-21
This is a charge dealing with riches and money matters as they relate to eternal life and rewards at the judgment seat of Christ.
